May 9, 1923 Collected 2 Diadophis amabilis similis on the road at Ballena Grade west of Witch Creek, driving with Van Denburgh and Slevin. One of my earliest hunting trips. This was before I kept complete records.

May 13, 1923 With Van Denburgh and Slevin on Mountain Springs Grade. This was the day they discovered the method of collecting Xantusia henshawi and Phyllodactylus tuberculosis by using a pinch-bar to pry rock flakes off of granite boulders.


July 4, 1923

Lemon Grove - Monte Vista - Dehesa - Frog Bridge - Back to Alpine Junction - Alpine - Descanso via Viejas Grade - Guatay Valley - Return via Viejas Grade Alpine and Paved Highway.

1201-2 1 mile east of Descanso on road to Milguatay Valley.

Also saw at this point 1 Xantusia henshawi but could not catch. Got one newt but he dried up.

1203-4 Top of old Viejas-Descanso Grade 1/4 mile west of summit. Saw several more X.h. at this point.

No snakes seen this day except one dead C. lateralis on Dehesa Grade west of Alpine Junction.
